Support Homestead Hustle & Healing this #GivingTuesday

 Our Story.

Homestead Hustle & Healing was created in 2019 by Vanessa Pierre, initially as a way to document gardening efforts and how re-establishing a relationship to land, farming, and homestead was able to lift her family out of poverty and food insecurity. As a single mother, Vanessa used gardening as therapy as well as a way to provide healthy, culturally appropriate food to herself and three children. As the organization became popular across social platforms in and locally, in the White Oak area of Silver Spring, MD, 3H began offering free online gardening education classes, free resources, and table talk discussions surrounding the needs of the black community.

We recognize food insecurity as a symptom of the underlying racial disparities in our communities. The pandemic has shed a light on the real need for food and social justice in East County. Homestead Hustle & Healing has recognized that the first steps in creating advocates for change and transforming our communities of color, is education, demonstration, and advocacy.

To date, we have received zero local or federal grant funding, only donations from community members like you.

We want to do more. We need your help to make a real change in our community.

Consider supporting our mission this #givingtuesday.

Education.

In 2021, we have had the opportunity to teach home gardening and food production to over 200 residents in over 12 free classes.

Our goal for 2022 is to double our impact. We are offering after-school education programs to expand our reach to middle school students at no cost as well as adult education through Montgomery County Recreation. Residents will be able to use low-income assistance programs to cover a portion of enrollment.

Community Engagement around Food.

During the Summer we hosted a free 3-day gardening education conference with over 450 attendees, 200 of who received live vegetable plants for hands-on learning.

We are currently planning to double our attendance in 2022 and introduce home gardening in any setting to directly combat food insecurity and engage East County through Farmers Markets, engagement events, and the 2nd Annual MoCo Grows Conference.

Advocacy.

We believe real change is two-pronged. Garden boots on the ground, and feet behind the podium. This year alone we have stood up to fight for multiple issues and legislation to combat food insecurity such as community gardens, increase access to SNAP benefits, expanded Child Tax Credit, funding for farmers markets, and more. We recognize the value of a seat at the table and have used our voice to advocate for our community through panel discussions and community listening sessions.

Our goal for 2022 is to continue to partner with community organizations that share our values and commitment to eradicating food insecurity and the racial inequities in our food system.
